The first step to finding a great contractor or handyman is to start by searching in the right places. Even if you do own a phone book, resist the urge to start flipping through it. This isn't the kind of decision you want to leave to chance. This holds true with the internet as well, the guy who pays Google the most isn't always your best choice.  

Once you have a few good options, the first thing you want to do is check their website and look for specialization and expertise as well as client testimonials.  Check and see if there are any outstanding or open complaints with the Better Business Bureau. Also, check social media, in addition to the BBB people do lodge their complaints there more often online than anywhere else. Facebook, Twitter, Yelp or any other free consumer social media website offers a good place to look for unhappy past customers. Check the company's social media sites, if they have them and always make sure your choice is properly insured and licensed for the job you are hiring them to complete.
